The "Carritt" Name

It all started with a couple of Carritts

For decades, Dan Carritt (the OG), has kept a large garden on his property and has processed and preserved his own food by canning. On the dinner table at Dan's, you'll get meat from an animal he hunted or fished, vegetables he canned from the garden, and for dessert, a pie made with the fruit from his trees. As a result of his living this way, he raised his boys, Coy and Kc, feeding them good wholesome food.

As the boys grew older, Coy wholeheartedly adopted his dad's strong beliefs on food. That is, that food should be grown in nutritious soil free of unnecessary or harmful chemicals.

Learning as he went, Coy gained a lot of knowledge and practical gardening skills from his dad (among many other things) and set on to carry out his legacy. In 2022, Coy bought his first property consisting of 27 acres in Mondamin, IA, which is where the modern Carritt Farms was born, although the heart of the concept remains on Dan Carritt's block in Little Sioux, Iowa.

Today, Carritt Farms consists of both Coy and Dan's properties where a variety of produce is grown ranging from fruits like apples, cherries, peaches, pears, and grapes to vegetables like broccoli, carrots, cabbage, corn, tomatoes, asparagus, and potatoes. In addition to traditional produce, wild foraging has become another focus of Carritt Farms. Since Coy was a kid, he has been foraging wild morel mushrooms and has even sold them to restaurants. Coy's wife, Madison, has a passion for identifying wild plants and fungi that have edible or medicinal uses. Together, Coy and Madison have begun building their dream of preserving the land that feeds them and providing their community with healthful food.

Although nuanced, the overall theme of Carritt Farms is simple: utilize nature for health and happiness while also preserving it. Thanks to the hard work, dedication, and passion of all these Carritts, Coy and Madison can continue to share the bounty of nature and spread their message of protecting it.
