Monotropa uniflora, also known as ghost plant, ghost pipe, or Indian pipe, is an herbaceous, parasitic, non-photosynthesizing, perennial flowering plant native to temperate regions of Asia, North America, and northern South America, but with large gaps between areas. ALTHOUGH RARELY FOUND, IT IS NOT RECOMMENDED TO HARVEST OR EVEN HANDLE THE PLANT IN WILD AREAS DUE TO CONCERNS OF OVER-HARVESTING OR THREATS OF DESTROYING THE PLANT AND ITS VAST UNDERGROUND NETWORK. GHOST PIPE CANNOT BE TRANSPLANTED OR CULTIVATED.

It is a common plant in our area but it requires very specific conditions to survive making it hard to find and therefore seemingly rare. Fortunately, we have discovered several patches on our property.  But, if we view the plant as 'sacred' then we must treat it as such. For this reason, we only harvest from our own land and take only a few stems from our largest clusters as it does not take many flowering stems to create the tincture. To ensure the survival of the plant, we leave all the rest of the flowering heads intact as well as all of the roots. We make sure there are plenty of blossoms left to be pollinated to continue the life cycle.

Ghost pipe is regarded for its physical and emotional pain-relieving properties. It can be useful for problems like nerve pain, insomnia, anxiety, and other similar conditions of the nervous system.

Suggested Use: As with any healing agent, herbal tinctures can be quite powerful and adverse reactions are always possible. Make sure to take the time to educate yourself on the herb you’re using before you try it. Ghost pipe does contain certain glycosides (compounds that help store sugars) that may be poisonous if eaten in large quantities.

There isn’t a standard “dose” so it’s best to begin a new tincture by trying only a few drops and drinking it in water or warm tea once a day. You can then gradually increase the dose to more drops or several times a day until you experience the results you desire. The immediate effects of ghost pipe may be felt within 15-45 minutes.

The black glass bottle is intended to help prevent the possibilities of light degradation and/or rapid evaporation. The tapered dropper helps to effectively control the dosage.

Keeping it Fresh: This tincture is relatively shelf-stable due to the alcohol content. However, storing it in the refrigerator or in a cool, dark area may help prolong its shelf-life.
